Why Rugs Are Different To Carpets
A fitted carpet is fairly predictable. One construction, one fibre, one set of dyes, fixed in place and backed by underlay.
A rug is another matter. It might be hand-knotted or machine-woven, coloured with natural or synthetic dyes, backed with cotton, jute or latex, and finished with fringes that behave nothing like the pile. Many rugs are also decades old, and older dyes are far less stable than modern ones.
That is why we treat rug cleaning as a separate service with its own process and its own dedicated facility, rather than as an extension of our carpet cleaning work.
Cleaning Wool Rugs
Wool responds very well to professional cleaning when the method suits the fibre.
Wool is naturally hard-wearing and keeps its appearance for decades, but it is a protein fibre, which means it reacts badly to high alkalinity and high temperatures. Products that are perfectly safe on synthetic carpet can strip the natural lanolin out of wool and leave it dry and dull. Too much heat causes felting and shrinkage, and neither can be undone.

Cleaning Persian And Oriental Rugs
Hand-knotted Persian and Oriental rugs are cleaned safely all the time, and they often benefit more from professional cleaning than anything else in the house.
These rugs are usually wool on a cotton foundation, sometimes with silk detailing. The risks are dye bleed, fringe damage and distortion of the foundation if the rug gets too wet. All three are manageable, but only with proper testing first.

Rugs We Do Not Clean
Being honest here matters more than taking the booking. Some fibres cannot be wet cleaned safely, and no reputable cleaner should try.
We do not clean rugs made from:
- Viscose
- Art silk
- Bamboo silk
- Banana silk
- Any other plant-based silk
- Jute
- Sisal
- Coir
Viscose causes the most heartache. It is sold widely as an affordable alternative to silk and it looks the part, but the fibre loses much of its strength when wet. A spilled glass of water is enough to leave a permanent mark, and cleaning can cause yellowing or flattening that cannot be reversed. Jute, sisal and coir shrink and discolour when wet cleaned.

Why We Take Rugs Away To Clean Them
We collect rugs and clean them at our dedicated Rug Cleaning Centre in Donabate rather than in your home. That is not for our convenience. It is the only way to clean a rug properly.

What Cleaning Actually Does For A Rug
The obvious result is a brighter, cleaner rug. The more valuable one is longevity.
Grit and dry soil work their way down to the base of the pile and act as an abrasive every time someone walks across, cutting the fibres from underneath. Removing that soil is the single most effective thing you can do to make a rug last. On older rugs, cleaning also lifts the crushing and matting that builds up along traffic routes.

That shortens considerably in homes with pets or young children, or where the rug sits in a hallway or main living area. It lengthens for rugs in bedrooms and guest rooms where there is little foot traffic.
Regular vacuuming in between makes a real difference, because it lifts surface grit before it works its way down to the base of the pile. Go carefully around the fringes, which are easily damaged by a beater bar.

Will cleaning damage my antique rug?
Not when the method matches the rug. We clean antique rugs regularly, though they need dye testing beforehand and gentler handling throughout. Tell us the age and origin when you get in touch so we take the right approach from the start.
How do I know if my rug is wool or viscose?
Check the label on the underside first. Viscose tends to feel cool and unusually silky, and it often has a sheen that shifts noticeably as you change viewing angle. If you are unsure, send us photographs of the pile and the reverse before booking and we will identify it for you.
Will the colours run?
We test the dyes for colourfastness before we start. If a colour shows any tendency to move, we adjust the method to prevent it. This testing is one of the main reasons rugs are cleaned at our facility rather than in your home.
My rug says dry clean only, can it be cleaned?
Often, yes. Manufacturers frequently label items "dry clean only" because it carries the least risk for them, not because wet cleaning would cause a problem. A trained technician can determine whether a rug is safely wet cleanable, and dry cleaning generally does not achieve the same results.
How long will my rug be away?
