“I’m a little bit nervous about having my rug cleaned.”
It is understandable to feel cautious about cleaning a rug, particularly if it is valuable, inherited or connected to a special memory. The right advice starts with assessing the rug rather than promising that every item can be cleaned safely.
Unlike fitted carpets, rugs can vary considerably in their fibres, dyes, backing, construction and condition. These differences affect whether professional cleaning is appropriate.
Colour bleeding is one potential problem, but it is not the only consideration. Unsuitable cleaning can also cause shrinkage, distortion, water marks, changes to the pile or damage to delicate fringes and backing materials.
A rug may contain several materials that respond differently to moisture. Its age, existing damage and previous treatments also need to be considered.
Before cleaning, the manufacturer's care instructions should be checked alongside the rug's construction and condition.
No. Colourfastness testing can help identify dyes that may bleed or transfer, but it does not establish cleaning suitability on its own.
The findings must be considered alongside the fibres, backing, condition and proposed cleaning process. A rug with stable dyes may still have other moisture-sensitive components.
Where there is a significant risk of damage, the appropriate recommendation may be to avoid wet cleaning and seek specialist advice.
Aqua-Dry no longer operates its rug cleaning centre or takes rugs away for cleaning. Some rugs can still be cleaned in your home, subject to their material, construction and condition.
We use professional hot water extraction for suitable materials. If a rug is unsuitable for this process, we explain this before proceeding. We do not offer dry-solvent, dry-compound or foam cleaning as alternatives.
We do not clean rugs made from:
Delicate, antique or colour-sensitive rugs may require specialist care beyond the service we currently provide.
Start with the manufacturer's label, usually found on the underside. Look for the fibre composition and any cleaning instructions.
If the label is missing or unclear, photographs of the pile, reverse and any remaining labels may help with an initial assessment. However, we cannot reliably identify every rug material from photographs alone, and further inspection may be necessary.
A silky appearance does not necessarily mean a rug contains natural silk. If you are unsure about the composition, seek advice before applying water or cleaning products.
Professional cleaning may remove accumulated dirt and improve the appearance of a suitable rug. Results depend on the material, condition and type of soiling.
Not every stain can be removed, and cleaning cannot reverse permanent colour changes, wear or existing damage. Our technicians explain the likely results and limitations before treatment.
Following hot water extraction, the rug will normally remain damp for a period. Drying depends on its construction, ventilation, room temperature and the cleaning required. Our technicians provide guidance on drying and normal use.
If you would like advice about your rug, send us its measurements, fibre composition and photographs of the rug and care label. We can then discuss whether on-site cleaning may be an option.
