Commercial Carpets and Upholstery often Neglected

If you work in an office or are responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of commercial buildings, then you’ll be familiar with the sight of the office cleaner collecting rubbish from the bins and washing down the kitchen counter-tops. Many of us love the fresh scent of cleaning products left lingering once the cleaner is gone. Perhaps there’s a strange comfort in knowing that the environment is hygienic. Maybe subconsciously we even feel a little healthier because of it!

But who is cleaning the carpets and fabrics in the building and are they as clean as they should be? We have found that businesses generally fall into two categories in this respect – larger, heavily used facilities where a maintenance contract is in place to clean these items and smaller offices which can operate on the basis of an annual clean or on a more ad-hoc basis. Because the daily or weekly office cleaning services don’t usually include fabric cleaning, we’ve found that many of our customers are surprised by the freshness and cleanliness of the office once a cleaning service is complete. Perhaps it shouldn’t be that surprising, when you consider that it can be a long time since some items have been cleaned properly. Dividers are often neglected for example and there can be many of these in an open-plan office, with staff sitting in close proximity to them. These fabrics can harbour dust and other bacteria which can contribute to poor health in the workplace.

Checklist of items with fabric that you might want to consider getting cleaned

Office Carpets (e.g. open-plan offices, stairs, corridors, meeting rooms, boardrooms etc)

Upholstery (e.g. office chairs, couches in open areas such as reception, dividers)

Rugs (e.g. rugs at the office entrance and in Boardrooms etc. Also wall hangings)

Special Treatments

There are two specialised services designed to give longevity and a deeper clean to office carpets, rugs and upholstery and these include

  • Scotchgard Protective treatment, which is an invisible protective shield and prevents spills from turning into unsightly stains.
  • Sanitisation Treatment, which is proven to eliminate many viruses and bacteria. It is impossible to prove any direct cost-benefit in this respect, however when many of our customers weigh up the comparatively low cost of this treatment compared to the potential high cost of absenteeism due to common infections – infections which may be hidden in these fabrics – they feel it’s worth the spend as a preventative measure.
