Many households purchase new furniture or carpets in the run-up to Christmas. You want your house to look lovely for that period when family and friends will be visiting.
What is the worst thing that can happen to your lovely new suite of furniture? Or your new carpets or rug over the Christmas period? Well there are many candidates for ruining your Christmas even for a short period of time. Among them are red wine, tea or coffee spillages; make-up stains; and yes, even someone getting sick.We have put together some carpet and upholstery cleaning tips to help you deal with any spills that may arise.
Stay calm would be our first piece of advice. Your carpets, upholstery or rugs won’t benefit from a frenzied attempt at cleaning up. Ask yourself the following question:
Is it liquid or solid or a combination?
A really good idea and one we always share with our customers is to keep a white absorbent towel where you can easily locate it when an accident happens. One tip is to leave a towel underneath a cushion of your sofa so that you can act quickly in the event of an accident.
This will help you to quickly deal with the spillage and help stop it becoming a permanent stain. Use your towel to dab up the liquid. Do not rub as this can distort the fibres of your suite or carpets. Stay calm and be patient. With careful dabbing you will remove almost all of the spillage.
If there is a solid to be dealt with e.g. vomit, use a knife or a spatula to remove the solids and then proceed with the blotting process.
Work from the outside of the spillage inwards, and please DO NOT rub or scrub the spillage.
Having done the best you can, if you still have a residue of the spillage that you cannot remove, please stop.
By going under your sink and using products not designed or removing the spillage, you may make removal of the stain impossible. Even if you have to leave the spillage over a few days at Christmas, it is possible that a professional carpet cleaning company will be able to remove it if all you have done is carry out these simple instructions.
Don’t panic, be prepared (towel where you can find it), dab, dab, dab, do not rub, don’t use any products not designed for the job and of course…have a great Christmas!!
We do a lot of stain protector application in the run up to Christmas and certainly recommend it for new upholstery, which is often a costly investment. This will help protect your upholstery and carpets from spills and stains. While not a bulletproof treatment, it is a huge help.
