Carpet Care Guide

Here at Aqua-Dry Carpet Cleaning we hope to provide you with some hints and tips on how to maintain your carpets and keep them looking cleaner for longer. We recommend that you follow the steps detailed in this Carpet Cleaning Care Guide for brighter, cleaner and fresher carpets all year round!

1. Vacuum Your Carpet Regularly:

How often is ‘regularly’?

This really depends on the amount of traffic on the carpeted areas. For some, this is once a week, for others, several times a week. If you vacuum regularly you will be able to see new stains as they appear and can attempt to remove them before they become permanent. Grit or pebbles walked in from outside can cause abrasion and premature wear, especially around entrance doorways. Regular vacuuming helps prevent this.

2. Use An Upright Vacuum Cleaner

Using an upright vacuum cleaner with a beater or roller bar is preferable. The beater bar or roller bar vibrates the carpet. This releases the dust and grit and allows it to be vacuumed away more easily than with the pull along type of vacuum cleaner.

3. Filters

Some vacuum cleaners come with hospital grade filters and could be considered for domestic use.

4. Vacuum Cleaner Maintenance

Is your vacuum cleaner not functioning efficiently? It could be because the bag is full. It is a good idea to check the bag regularly. Filters should also be checked regularly, as inefficient filters may affect your indoor air quality. You can also check that debris is not caught in the floor tool as this affects the machine’s performance. Sometimes it’s due to the age of the vacuum cleaner. Older models may not be as efficient as newer ones.

5. Stain Removal

When a stain appears there is no need to panic. However, it is important that you don’t try to rub at the stain. Vigorous rubbing can actually cause damage to the carpet pile which is usually irreversible.

It is also important not to use domestic products to try to get rid of the stain. They are often not designed for carpets and can result in further damage. The best thing to do is remove as much of the stain as possible. The method will depend on the type of stain.

Heavy soiling: Remove heavy soiling with a spatula and absorb the moist residue with an absorbent towel.

Liquid spills:   Instead of rubbing, absorb the stain by blotting it up with white towelling or absorbent paper. Do not use coloured towels or coloured paper. If the stain persists just call us and we will be able to advise you over the phone.

6. Matting

A good mat placed in your entrance hallway helps greatly to remove soil and moisture. It takes about 15 feet of walking to remove soil completely from your shoes. Unless you have a very long mat, you will need to wipe your feet to effectively remove soiling. Also it is a good idea to change your mat regularly.

7.  Frequent Carpet Cleaning

Following these care tips should prolong the life of your carpet. However, a regular professional cleaning will still be necessary.

What is regular? This depends on the amount of traffic on the carpeted areas. We would suggest having your carpets cleaned at least once every 2 years. This will vary depending on the amount of traffic and use your carpet gets.
